Among the many classic treks in the Himalayas the trek to the Langtang Valley brings a wonderful discovery of a beautiful region to explore. With a moderate trekking grade this trek offers fantastic scenery.
The Langtang trek commences driving 7 hours to Syabrubesi from Kathmandu passing through beautiful countryside on a precipitous road- it’s adventurous. During the trek you’d walk on the trail along the Bhote Koshi river passing through Tamang villages meeting really warm and hospitable locals. Of course you’d find yourself in the lap of Mother Nature traversing lush forests stunning landscape breathing fresh mountain air. Then you’d be reaching the widespread Langtang Valley where you can visit the famous Kyanjin Gompa- a monastery standing at the highest elevation of your trek, and from here you can see the spectacular view of the Langtang Peaks.
The trekking itinerary of Langtang Valley takes you through local villages where you can find strong influence of Tibetan prevalent. It certainly is a fascinating discovery to uncover the traditions and culture of the Tamang community in the Langtang region. Following breakfast, you’d be driving to Syabrubesi via Dhunche, a small town nestled in the hilly region of Rasuwa district is smooth, winding and broken by bone-jangling sections. Your jaws are surely going to drop in bemusement, when you see a bus packed inside out with people, chickens and goats, rumbling downhill. When you get there get your hiking boots ready for tomorrow, it is the doorway to a whole new world for you, the Langtang Trekking region. While in Syabrubesi, stroll around and meet the locals who are friendly. Overnight in Syabrubesi.
Altitude: 2,380m/7,830ft|Trek 6 hrs
Today after breakfast you’d leave Syabru Besi walking upstream the Bhote Kosi river and cross a suspension bridge. Then, you’d carry on walking through thick forests en route where you’d find a wide range of plants like oak, maple, bamboo, alder and many others. Of course there is diveres fauna, too you can see like the langurs (monkey), yellow-throated martin, Himalayan black bear, wild boar and several other wild animals. As you move further on the trail you’ll cross a steel suspension bridge 2000 meter across the Langtang River. The trail now moves to the northern bank of the Langtang River with the captivating views of waterfalls. Eventually you’d reach Changdam also known as Lama Hotel at 2410 metre.
Altitude: 3543m/11,621ft, 3,430m/11,253ft|Trek 6-7 hrs
From Lama Hotel you’d commence your walk to reach Langtang Village at 3330m which is a long walk. After having had walked for almost 3 hours, at first you’d reach Ghora Tabela, a settlement with few trekker's lodge. Then, you’d traverse the Tamang settlements to see prayer wheels and Tibetan- style prayer flags. Also, we will be mesmerized by the alluring views of the Langtang range en-route. Then, you will reach the village of Langtang- that was buried by the April earthquake in 2015, but now it’s in fully restored with a new settlement. Overnight in Langtang.
Altitude: 3,870m/12,697ft| Trek 3 hrs
Today you’d pass through verdant yak pastures and quaint villages of Mundu to Sindum. You’d come across a wooden beam bridge and after crossing it you’d reach the wide valley before which you’d climb a moraine. Eventually, ascending along the peak passes you arrive at Kyanjin Gompa where you can see a small monastery and a government-run cheese factory. Overnight in Kyanjin.
Altitude: 5000m/16,404ft|Trek 7-8 hrs
Today you can go on a side trip climbing the Tserko Ri at 5150m and you’d also reach the Langtang Glacier and Langshisha Kharka a beautiful pasture for the yaks to graze. From here you can enjoy the stunning sunrise. The walk would be a long one as well as challenging for your legs. Then you’d walk back following the same trail back to Kyanjin Gompa and spend the night at the same hotel. Overnight in Kyanjin.
Trek: 6/7 hrs
After breakfast, you’d commence walking downhill toward Lama Hotel. You’d walk back the same trail that was used when climbing. There is no hurry since the trail is all about descending making it shorter than ascending. You’d traverse quaint Tamang villages and verdant forests enjoying the beautiful vistas. You’ll be halting in Lama Hotel located along the Langtang River, listening the sound of thundering river.Overnight in Lama Hotel.
Trek: 5 hrs
Today is another day of following the trail back to Syabrubesi which is the same route through lush forest and enjoying the breathtaking scenery as you retrace descending. Your final destination would be Syabrubesi. Overnight in Syabrubesi.
Following an early breakfast, get ready to drive back to Kathmandu on a tourist bus. Enjoy the drive which is indeed fantastic passing by beautiful Nepalese countryside of little towns, river and villages. Once you reach Kathmandu, check in at your hotel. Free to explore on your own, indulge in some last minute shopping or visit some UNESCO Heritage Sites in Kathmandu Valley. Overnight in Kathmandu.
