On this day be prepared for a real, traditional and cultural tour. Your local, tour guide will meet you in the lobby and then you commence your tour of Bungamati and Khokana-two Newari, traditional villages. You’d be driven to Bungamati, a typical Newari village. Here you’d see traditional houses and also experience the culture of the medieval times. Walking along the streets of Bungamati you will find ongoing works of wood carving. In some courtyards you can also see grains being dried out and yeast for local wine. Pass through the narrow alleys and you can see the hanging chillies, garlic, onion and corn on the struts of the houses. You’d also visit the shikara-style temple of Rato Machhindranath surrounded by traditional houses and also the Karya Binayak Temple.
Later you’d proceed to Khokana, another interesting, medieval village but smaller than Bungamati. It is situated north of Bungamati. This village is smaller and reputed for its mustard oil and the local temple. Walk along the stone paved streets with traditional houses on both sides- perfect for photography. Also you’d find a chaitya (place to worship) at every crossroad. Of course you cannot miss a visit to the oil mills where you can see the traditional way of producing the mustard oil. You can see the locals mostly engaging themselves as farmers making a living out of their green farmlands at the foot of the nearby hills.
After having had a good glimpse of the traditional, Newar villages in the Kathmandu Valley, you’d be driven to Patan- City of Fine Arts. Once you enter the Patan Durbar Square you’ll find yourself in artistic courtyards surrounded by gorgeous pagoda style temples. You’d surely find the sights so spectacular amongst the many the places in Asia. Visit the Keshav Naryan Temple, the earliest Malla Palace and truly a masterpiece of the medieval times. Here is where the earliest of the Malla kings used to reside, thus becoming the centre of Patan’s religious and social life. The tour is a perfect way to see the dwellings of the Malla royalties- truly an architectural beauty. In this square you can visit the Patan Museum that has an impressive display of bronze statues and religious objects. Also the artwork and architecture of the medieval times of the Malla dynasty is evident. You cannot miss the sight of the unique Krishna Mandir (temple) with its exquisite stone carvings built in a Shikhkara style.
There is another beautiful temple called the Rudra Varna Mahavir you can visit. Built in a pagoda style this is a Buddhist temple worthy to uncover. You can just see the workmanship which is stunning and masterpiece of Malla architecture. Enriched with Buddhist culture Patan visit cannot be complete visiting the four ancient stupas built by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century AD at the four cardinal points of this place. Another, rewarding place to visit would be the Golden Temple- a Newari Buddhist Temple. The temple is a stunning piece of work dating back to the 12th century and it’s amazingly, polished brass gives a golden tint, thus the temple is nicknamed “Golden Temple”. After you’ve had a tour of a city of art and craft, surely you’d be going back to have seen so much of medieval art and architecture that really flourished during the Malla reign. Drive back to the hotel with a memorable experience.
